Inlays & Onlays

Joyful woman showing off her beautiful teeth with a smileWhen it comes to repairing teeth, an inlay and onlay will always be up for the challenge no matter how difficult the cavity may be. With the inlay or onlay being bigger in size, it is able to spread among the tooth cusp and restore your chewing ability. If you are a good candidate for an inlay or onlay, then we will be glad to go over the entire process with you.

Inlay/Onlay Process

The process of having an inlay or onlay will consist of multiple dental visits. The initial visit will not take more than an hour and a half. During your initial visit, the dentist will examine the tooth that will have the inlay or onlay and determine if you will benefit from them.

After a decision to have an inlay or onlay placed, the dentist will make the area numb. After numbing has taken effect, the decay will be cleaned and the tooth impression will be created. The dental laboratory will then receive the impression for the fabrication of the inlay or onlay.

As the inlay is being created, the dentist will have you wear a provisional inlay until your permanent one is ready. You will then schedule a second appointment to have the provisional removed. After removal, the permanent will be fitted.

How Long Do Inlays and Onlays Last?

Having an inlay or onlay means you have a quality dental appliance that will last for five to 30 years. This longevity is maintainable because of the good brushing and flossing you conduct on a daily level. Not only that, but having regular checkups should also be done.

Knowing If an Inlay or Onlay is Right For You

You will likely be a good fit for an inlay or onlay if your teeth have damage that is moderate. You will also benefit if you decide to have an inlay instead of a crown, which is a substitute for the inlay or onlay. After your appointment is scheduled, it will then be decided if you will benefit from an inlay following an examination of the tooth.

Inlay and Onlay Material Used

Just like other dental procedures, there are all types of materials that a dentist can use for inlays and onlays. Although the most popular material used is porcelain, other materials may also be used.

Besides that, if an inlay or onlay has porcelain, the tooth will need to have an impression for fittings. Once the fitting is obtained, the inlay or onlay will be created by the dental lab. While you are waiting for the inlay or onlay, you will have a provisional placement.

Do Inlays and Onlays Require Follow Up?

After your permanent inlay or onlay is placed, it requires continued care while at home. Part of taking care of the inlay or onlay includes refraining from foods that are sticky, such as gum. Enjoying food such as this may cause your inlay or onlay to come off.

Treatment with an inlay or onlay can be an easy process. This is why at Mukilteo Smiles we will take the time needed to have your inlay or onlay fitted perfectly. Thus, the difference in knowing if an inlay or onlay is right for you is determined by you giving us a call at (425) 438-2400 to find out.
