TMJ

3D rendered xray of a skull with the TMJ highlightedExperiencing pain within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be an excruciating experience that can lead to discomfort while eating and chewing. Besides these normal activities, the TMJ has more purpose than any joint in the body. If a disorder develops, it will be stemming from some sort of joint impairment.

An impairment could be the result of many things, and ultimately there will be pain associated with it. Having pain could also be due to stiffness, headaches, soreness, or sounds of popping. If these symptoms are present, the pain could become very sharp or very dull in nature.

Because of so many possibilities for a disorder to develop, it is important to get in touch with the dentists at Mukilteo Smiles. After contacting us, we can discuss the symptoms in more detail and other possible disorders originating from the TMJ. Plus, the sooner you get in to see us, the sooner you can receive the right treatment.

Common Symptoms Associated with TMJ Disorders

Having a TMJ disorder means there will likely be symptoms presenting themselves. When symptoms come up, it is a good idea to know what they are. Most of the time the symptom may arise due to the seriousness of the condition.

TMJ and Headaches

A headache can be associated with a TMJ disorder and can be severe in nature. If proper articulation of the joint is not occurring, then the jaw's connecting muscles and tendons may experience a tenseness. This tension could then cause a pinching of the nerves which would then cause headaches.

Treating a TMJ Disorder

As the causes for a TMJ disorder are plenty, so are the treatments. It is important to remember that although each treatment is different, they each have the same goal of alleviating the disorder. Before you begin any treatment, it is important to have no pain at the start.

Once no pain is present, the dentist will evaluate your bite and determine if misalignment has developed. If misalignment has occurred, then the dentist may elect to prescribe a mouthguard. You may also need to perform some sort of exercise to help alleviate the condition.

Apply a Mouthguard

By applying a mouthguard, you are creating a small gap between the teeth. This gap will keep the TMJ separated enough so that any pain caused by pressure can be relieved. By having your mouthguard custom made, you will experience the most comfort possible.

Exercise the TMJ

By implementing TMJ exercises, the TMJ will relax and allow teeth clenching to subside and realign the jaw. You can implement a multitude of exercises and each one can be done wherever you are. It is a good idea to use a mirror so that you can see how the upper and lower teeth are misaligned.

Having any pain while opening or closing your mouth can be a direct result of your TMJ and if left untreated it can result in a disorder. The good news is that the dental team at Mukilteo Smiles will provide you with some pointers on how to alleviate the pain you are experiencing. So call (425) 438-2400 today and get your consultation scheduled.
